Power Maxed TAG Racing take to the streets

There aren’t many places in the country that would tolerate the closure of an entire city centre for a whole weekend to play host to the whims of a few petrolheads, let alone encourage it. Coventry has always been a city that defies conventions, and the annual MotoFest is something that has grown inexorably since its inception in 2014.

As a local company, whose vision is very firmly aligned with that of MotoFest, it was only natural that Power Maxed would play a pivotal role in the development of the event. With TV’s very own Paul Hollywood, the man behind Great British Bake off taking to the helm of the Power Maxed Racing (PMR) British Touring Cars (BTCC) in 2016 and 2017, the Warwickshire-based company has ensured their high-performance engineering masterpieces have been at the forefront of the attractions, and this year was no exception.

The noise made by a BTCC car at race pace is, for want of a better word, spectacular. To hear it on the city streets, which normally play host to bored commuters awaiting their opportunity to exit the ring road, is a unique opportunity that spectators simply wouldn’t get anywhere else.

Both Saturday and Sunday, the crowds were treated to BTCC Race Winner and Fastest Lap holder Senna Proctor at the wheel of his Power Maxed TAG Racing Vauxhall Astra, being driven at full race speed around the closed public roads. With an unsilenced Milltek exhaust fitted, the noise from the PMR-prepared Astra’s 2.0 Turbo Swindon powerplant echoing off the underpass walls and concrete tunnels could be heard across the entire city, giving more than 100,000 people the one-off opportunity to experience the leaders of the BTCC doing what they do best.

The Power Maxed MotoFest is a completely free event, attracting not only motorsport fans, but die-hard petrolheads of all ages from every corner of the British Isles. Having worked alongside the MotorSport Association (MSA) during preparations, this year the organisers were granted the rare permission to run a competitive event on the streets; something that hasn’t happened in the Midlands since the death of the Birmingham Super Prix in 1990.

“I absolutely love MotoFest, so putting our name to it was a no brainer,” says Power Maxed head honcho Adam Weaver. “It’s genuinely one of my favourite events of the year. As a kid I visited the Super Prix, and absolutely love the idea of drivers and racers flat out in what would normally be such an everyday environment. Plus, if seeing Senna driving the Astra creates even more BTCC fans, then I’ll be even happier. The team behind the Power Maxed MotoFest do an amazing job, and somehow seem to make it better every year.”

Power Maxed TAG Racing driver Senna Proctor said “It’s every little boy’s dream isn’t it, driving a racing car on the road? I’m not shamed to admit that I was grinning like a Cheshire cat when I had the Astra flat through the underpasses - we’re usually concentrating so hard when driving that we don’t really register the exhaust note. Plus, doing a full race start in front of a police officer on the public road is surely something that we can all appreciate.”

Power Maxed TAG Racing are currently leading the Manufacturers’ and Teams’ Championships in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. The season continues this weekend (9-10th June) at Oulton Park, Cheshire.
